Introduction
On October 1, 2014, boxer Laishram Sarita Devi (Sarita) shot into the limelight when she tearfully but firmly refused to accept the bronze medal on the podium during the medal distribution ceremony at the 17th Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea. Not only did Sarita, a four-time Asian Games gold medal winner, refuse to accept the medal but she also stepped down from the podium after all the medals had been awarded, took the bronze medal from the hand of the officer, and put it around the neck of Park Ji-na (Park), the silver medal winner. Sarita’s refusal to accept the bronze was in protest against the judges’ decision in the semi-final match of the women’s lightweight boxing event the day before..
